Start Teddy the Right Way
A first-hour plan for GnomeCode’s six-player escape horror.
Teddy is already out. You are not waiting for a Steam date. You join a Roblox server with up to six people, you vote a chapter, and a life-sized bear decides whether the hug is a joke. This page is the first hour: lobby habits, mode choice, and the smallest set of facts that keep you from dying in the spawn hallway.
What you are actually playing
GnomeCode shipped Teddy on 31 October 2020 after an unfinished tutorial series turned into a real game. The loop is Piggy-shaped on purpose. Children collect keys and tools, crawl through gaps, and leave before the timer or the bear ends the round. One player can become Teddy in Player mode. AI mode lets the server drive the monster. Nightmare paints the map colder and turns downed kids into extra hunters. Those three words are not flavor text. They change who you listen for.
The official description is short: a giant cuddly bear that does not feel right. The shop, the Puzzle Piece counter, and the chapter vote do the rest. You do not need a Trello. You need controls and a chapter page.
Lobby order of operations
- Confirm the place ID on official links. Favorites that say Teddy Escape are the wrong orphanage.
- Look at the shop only long enough to see your Puzzle Piece count. Buying a face can wait until after a win. The shop guide lists what is worth Pieces.
- Vote a chapter you can finish. New accounts should force Chapter 1 Nursery even if a veteran spam-clicks the zoo.
- Vote AI for the first two escapes. Player Teddy is a different class. Nightmare can wait until you can leave Nursery without a comment about “where is crouch.”
- When the cutscene starts, do not skip so hard that you miss the objective line. Mom leaving you in a daycare is the story; the line after that is the win condition.
Your first survivor contract
Move like you are being listened to, because you are. Walk when the audio is close. Crouch for vents and for quiet. Close doors behind you if the bear is large and the doorway is small. Do not hoard a key in a corner while four teammates stand at a lock. Call the color once, drop it if someone is closer to the door, and keep sweeping.
Hiding is a tool, not a lifestyle. Closets and crawl toys buy ten seconds to let a patrol pass. They do not beat the timer. If you hide through an entire Nursery vote you will leave with zero badges and a teammate who never saw the red key. Pair this page with how to survive after your first death, not before you understand the vote screen.
Your first Teddy contract
If the lobby rolls you as the bear, do not treat it like a loss. Read how to play as Teddy between rounds. You get a limited honey stack in Player mode. Honey on a doorway the kids must reuse is better than honey on a random rug. AI Teddy does not spend honey; if you leave, the server often replaces you with AI. That is why a rage-quit bear still ruins the map.
Double Teddy Chance is a 120 Robux pass that only matters if you enjoy the hunter role. It is not a new-player purchase. See the game pass tier.
Currency and badges in hour one
Puzzle Pieces drop for playing, not for watching ads. Double Pieces doubles match payouts and does nothing to Robux packs. Spend the first stack on a survivor cosmetic you can see in third person if you must spend at all. Honey refills matter more once you hunt. Chapter badges — Chapter One through Five, Chapter Zero, Nightmare, Happy Family — are the long list. Track them with the badge checklist so you do not replay Nursery for a badge you already own.
Promo codes are usually absent. The Codes Hub is empty on purpose. Do not stall the vote to paste a blog string.
A simple first-session script
Play two AI Nursery rounds. In the first, only learn audio and doors. In the second, commit to leaving. If you escape, vote Camp or stay on Nursery until the badge toast appears. If you fail, watch the mid-article compilation below, then retry the same chapter instead of hopping to the zoo because a friend said it is “funny.” Funny maps are wide. Wide maps punish people who do not yet escape on purpose.
After those two rounds, open Roles so you know why a teammate is buying honey, and skim updates so a seasonal lobby does not surprise you. That is a complete first hour. Everything else on this wiki is optional until the hug stops feeling random.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players ask after a failed escape.
Is Teddy free to play?
Yes. The Roblox place is free. Puzzle Pieces come from matches. Game passes are optional and ranked on the [game pass tier](/tier-list/game-passes/).
Should I start in Nightmare?
No. Learn AI Nursery first. Nightmare infects downed players and needs the [Nightmare guide](/guides/nightmare-mode/).
How many people are in a server?
Up to six. Smaller lobbies still run, but votes and Player Teddy feel different with two people.
Where do I go after this page?
Open [controls](/guides/controls/), then the walkthrough for the chapter you just voted.
