Teddy Survive the Hug
Sound, doors, and timing — the three things the bear respects.
Most Teddy deaths are not puzzle deaths. They are hallway deaths. Someone sprints with a key, the floorboards announce them, and the hug arrives before the lock animation finishes. Survival is the skill that makes every walkthrough on this wiki cheaper. It is also the skill Nightmare punishes when you get it half right.
Hear the bear before you see the bear
Teddy is an audio game wearing a cute mesh. Footsteps, a growl, a thud on a door — those cues are the minimap. If you play with music over the client, you are choosing to be surprised. Lower other apps. Walk when the sound is mid-range. Crouch when it is close. Sprint only when you already see the exit or when a honey trap is behind you and the timer is a rumor.
AI Teddy pathing is greedy. If you make noise in a room, the AI often steers toward that room. That is useful. A teammate who understands how to play as Teddy will use the same rule in reverse. You can donate a loud toy kick in a dead-end to pull a patrol off a lock. Do it on purpose or do not do it at all.
Doors are extra health
A closed door is not a wall. It is a delay. Large Teddy loses time on wooden doors in AI mode. That delay is how a kid with a key lives. Close the door you just used if the bear is behind you. Do not close a door on a teammate who is holding the objective. Call it. The controls guide is where you confirm the interact key so you are not mashing jump on a handle.
Barricades and moveable props exist on some chapters. Kick a block only if you know it opens a crawl or blocks a chase. Random physics in the Nursery looks funny in a montage and looks fatal when the only vent is now a pile.
Hiding has a clock
Closets, beds, crawl toys, and counter gaps are real. They are also how people miss the entire objective list. Hide when the audio is in your room and you do not have a path. Leave when the audio passes. If you stay for thirty seconds “to be safe,” the timer will fail you even if the bear never finds you. The hide-spot tool lists habits per chapter so you stop inventing a new closet every vote.
Do not hide in the first closet beside spawn. Every new Teddy checks it. Do not hide in the same crate two rounds in a row on Player mode. Humans remember.
Inventory discipline
Carry what the next door needs. A second key in your pocket while a lock waits across the map is a team wipe waiting for a hug. Drop or pass. Teddy does not have a huge shared inventory tutorial; it has six people and a clock. If you do not know which item you are holding, you are not ready for Chapter 4 Zoo.
Chapter-unique tools matter. Toy Store batteries and silver tools, Zoo fish and cogs — those are not souvenirs. They are why that map exists. Read the walkthrough before you vendor them in your head as “junk.”
When to abandon the plan
A good survivor cancels. If three people already died on a camp path, stop sending a fourth down the same hall. Reroute. If Nightmare has already spawned a small Teddy in the vent you wanted, the vent is no longer yours. See Nightmare mode. If the last lock needs a key that spawned in a room the bear now camps, bait the camp with a teammate or reset the mental route. Ego clears are how Happy Family stays rare.
Leaving is allowed. How to escape is the other half of this page. Survival without an exit is just a long hide. Exit without survival is a speedrun you will not finish. Practice both in AI Nursery, then take the same habits to Camp.
Team talk that does not get you killed
Short calls: color of key, room name, “bear kitchen,” “hiding.” Long stories in chat are a death sentence. If you play with randoms who never type, play as if you are solo and treat extra unlocked doors as luck. The Roles hub explains why a silent Teddy player is still information — honey on the floor means a human is hunting.
Survive the next two minutes. Then survive the objective. Then leave. That order is the whole guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players ask after a failed escape.
Should I always crouch?
Crouch when the bear is close or you need a vent. Walking is the default. Sprinting is a tool. Details sit in [controls](/guides/controls/).
Is hiding until the timer better than running?
No. Hiding buys a window. The [chapter checklist](/tools/chapter-checklist/) still has to go to zero.
Does AI Teddy use honey?
No. Honey is a Player Teddy tool. AI still hears you. Read [how to play as Teddy](/guides/how-to-play-as-teddy/) if you want the other side.
Why do I die after I get the last key?
Because the last lock is where everyone sprints. Walk the last ten seconds. The exit is in [how to escape](/guides/how-to-escape/).
