Teddy Beat Nightmare Mode
Infection, extra hunters, and the vote you should not click for a first escape.
Nightmare is the mode people vote as a dare. The lighting goes cold, the music leans wrong, and a downed child does not simply spectate. They can come back as a small Teddy or a large one and keep hunting. If you treat Nightmare like AI with a filter, you will donate a snowball. This page is how to stop the snowball — and how to start one if you are the first bear.
What actually changes
The map is still the chapter you voted. Keys still spawn. The timer still ends the joke. The difference is population. One human Teddy can still drop honey. A hugged kid can join the hunter side. Small Teddies are slower and they fit baby corridors. That combination deletes the “just vent away” habit you learned in how to survive.
Think of it as a light infection mode, not a harder pathing table. The modes tier list ranks Nightmare at the top of threat for survivors and in the middle of fun for people who like chaos. It is a poor classroom. Learn Nursery in AI first via Getting Started.
Survivor rules that still work
Do not feed. A hero run into a camped lock creates a second hunter next to the lock. Wait for a window. Split so one hug cannot convert the whole stack. If two people must touch the same tool bench, the second person watches audio instead of standing on the first person’s shoes.
Close doors on small Teddies too. They are slow. A door still costs them time. You just cannot assume the vent behind the shelf is sterile anymore. Recheck the hide-spot tool with Nightmare in mind: a closet that was safe against one large mesh is a coffin if a small bear can enter the same room unseen.
Call conversions. “Two bears” is the most important sentence in the mode. If nobody types, assume the first death already happened and play wider.
Hunter rules that snowball
Your first hug is an investment. Hug the player who is carrying, not the player who is lost in a decorative corner. A converted kid who knows the map is more dangerous than a converted kid who just installed Roblox. After the first conversion, you can pressure two objectives at once. That is how Chapter timers die.
Honey still matters for the original Teddy. Small allies do not replace jars. Put honey on the exit approach after you have a partner. Before that, honey on the first key door is still correct. How to play as Teddy remains the honey textbook.
Which chapters forgive Nightmare
Nursery is the least cruel because paths are short and the badge exists for a reason. Camp is meaner because dark corners hide small Teddies. Toy Store looks bright and still fails teams that sprint between aisles. Zoo is a nightmare in the ordinary English sense: width plus infection. If your lobby wants a fair dare, vote Nursery Nightmare, not Zoo Nightmare, unless everyone already has the Chapter 4 badge.
Chapter Five and Chapter Zero follow the same infection rules. Do not add a new map and a new mode on the same night unless you enjoy spectating.
After the round
Nightmare has its own badge energy. Check the badge list so you know whether the toast you wanted actually exists. If you hated the mode, vote AI next and run a clean escape with the chapter checklist. If you loved it, you are in the minority that keeps Player and Nightmare in the vote rotation — just say so in lobby so the new kid can leave before the cutscene.
Teddy released in 2020 and Nightmare is still the argument in 2026. That is a compliment to the mode. It is also a warning. Click it when the group can afford a wipe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players ask after a failed escape.
Is Nightmare just purple lighting?
No. Downed kids can become extra Teddies, including small ones that use baby paths. Lighting is the warning label.
Can I still escape after someone is infected?
Yes. Split, close doors, and finish the route in [how to escape](/guides/how-to-escape/). Do not stack on one lock.
Does AI Nightmare exist?
Lobbies vote mode and chapter separately. If a human Teddy leaves, AI can still take over. Infection is the part that makes the vote scary.
Which map should I try first in Nightmare?
[Chapter 1 Nursery](/guides/chapter-1-nursery/) is the least wide. Zoo is the harshest pairing.
